I suggested to my friend that he have the broken screw analyzed by a metallurgist for a professional opinion on the condition of the metal. ? None of the screws were broken before they attempted to remove them. It's actually mahogany, but it's cherry mahogany. The bottom is tight, there was no rot or soft wood anywhere and every other part of this boat is cherry. ![]() If the silicon bronze is clean then it's doing its job and holding. THEORY: My theory is that since this is a "big boat" with 1+ inch of bottom lumber going over white oak frames any bronze screw in its right mind would break. Another says it needs to be re-fastened entirely. SUGGESTION: One pro said to stagger new screws in the existing planks. It was allegedly re-fastened 10 years ago. ![]() PROBLEM: During survey, the screws (about ten random screws) were shearing off on the bottom of a 40+foot cruiser. I have my theory but thought I'd float the question here to hear what the rest of you big boat boys think. I'm a runabout guy and I've been posed with a "big boat" question. ![]()
